Job description

Starr Tours is seeking an Associate Director of Maintenance to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of our motorcoach fleet. This is a hands-on leadership role that blends technical oversight, parts and inventory ownership, workflow discipline, and outside service coordination.

The Associate Director works closely with the Director of Maintenance to ensure fleet readiness, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. This position also serves as the primary point of contact for outside service customers and plays a key role in maintaining profitability and service quality.

This role is designed as a development opportunity for future maintenance leadership. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, systems-oriented, hungry to grow, and humble enough to learn.

Hands-on wrench-turning is expected to comprise approximately 20–40% of the role, depending on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Maintenance & Compliance

  • Ensure PM services, inspections, and repairs are completed accurately and on time

  • Support technicians with diagnostics and troubleshooting

  • Maintain DOT/FMCSA compliance and audit readiness

  • Convert DVIRs into timely repair actions

Parts, Inventory & Systems Ownership

  • Own all aspects of parts inventory accuracy, pricing, and tracking

  • Design and enforce workflows for ordering, receiving, stocking, and issuing parts

  • Utilize maintenance software (Fleetio preferred) including PO tracking and reporting

  • Ensure technician compliance with inventory and work order processes

  • Manage vendor relationships and cost-effective sourcing

Outside Service Operations

  • Serve as the primary liaison for outside service customers

  • Coordinate scheduling and communicate repair timelines

  • Support billing and invoicing with margin awareness

  • Collaborate with Dispatch on road service and schedule disruptions

  • Support IMG roadside assistance as needed

Workflow, Leadership & Facility Support

  • Oversee work order accuracy and documentation

  • Participate in weekly on-call rotation (currently every 5th week)

  • Maintain presence during mechanic shifts and office hours

  • Support facility upkeep and maintain a clean, safe shop

  • Help drive continuous improvement initiatives

Schedule & Expectations

  • 45–50 hours per week depending on season and operational demand

  • Participation in rotating on-call schedule

  • Availability aligned with mechanic shifts and office hours

Job requirements

Required / Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in fleet maintenance, transportation, or heavy-duty vehicle environments

  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform hands-on work

  • Experience with parts inventory management and vendor coordination

  • Familiarity with DOT/FMCSA maintenance requirements

  • Experience with maintenance management systems (Fleetio preferred)

  • Strong organizational and documentation skills

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required (CDL-B with Passenger endorsement preferred or willingness to obtain)

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.

  • Ability to work flexible hours and respond to off-hour needs
